I would love to tell you about our wonderful community of LeMars, Iowa, and the surrounding areas! Please scroll down for more specific information about the “Ice Cream Capitol of the World!” Our town maybe considered small at 9 square miles, and our population sits at 9,996 people, but we know we are lucky to have so many wonderful large and small businesses, and recreational assets! Scroll down to the bottom for links to many of the places and businesses highlighted on this page.

Community History

The history of Le Mars dates back as early as the 1850s when settlers arrived to the region now known as Plymouth County. The county of Plymouth was organized in 1853 and started with 2 townships.

In 1869, Le Mars was was named when railroad builder John I. Blair arrived by special train with a company of officials and a group of ladies. When the train stopped the ladies were asked to suggest a name for the town, then known as Saint Paul Junction. The ladies' names were:

Sarah Reynolds

As records indicate, these ladies took the first letters from all their names and consequently, we had the name of our town.

We have a wonderful Plymouth County Museum, located in LeMars. This is a great and engaging place for adults and children to learn more about our history!

Events

Our community has events for every season. We embrace being the ICE CREAM CAPITOL OF THE WORLD, because more ice cream is made here daily than any other place on Earth, thanks to Wells Blue Bunny Ice Cream, and the many employees that live here! Our annual Ice Cream Days is the highlight of the summer, with fun activities all week long for the young and old alike!

Not to be outdone, our Plymouth County fair is one of the best in the state of Iowa. We have a wonderful farmers market every Saturday from May to September, where you can purchase local baked goods, fruits and vegetables, and homemade health and beauty products.

Our Pioneer Village Christmas Celebration weekend & Christmas Parade is an annual tradition for the Holiday Season here in LeMars. We know how to do parades, and the Pioneer Village Christmas at our fairgrounds is a great family activity. Complete with Santa visits, horse drawn sled rides, entertainment, the Festival of Trees, refreshments, s'mores, and the Famous Round Barn.

Industry

Here in LeMars, we have many booming small and large businesses. Our community is home to Wells Blue Bunny Ice Cream, Bodean’s, Schuster’s Trucking, and many other industries focused on manufacturing, retail trade and education. Our newly built hospital adds many health and social care jobs as well.

Dinning

We have so many locally owned places that serve great food! Our wonderful coffee shops, Bellissimo and Habitue are great places to go for coffee, tea, a light lunch or treats. P’s Pizza House and 4 Brothers Restaurants are dine in restaurants that have a variety of tasty appetizers and entrees. Iowa Bar-B-Q has a selection of daily smoked meats and sides. Jerry’s Pizza is hometown famous for the best local pizza. Of course, our Wells Blue Bunny Ice Cream Parlor has the world’s best ice cream treats, scooped for your pleasure. For cocktails and social hour, we have a home town brewery called Wise-I Brewery that changes their beer selections seasonly. We also have options for wine and spirits called Cork It, with their relaxing outdoor patio, or Brew, where you can go in or use their pick up window.

Shopping

Here in LeMars, we have a very quaint downtown area full of shopping! Joba’s is a beautiful home decorating store, complete with custom framing available. Sugar and Spice is the cutest children’s boutique for ages 0-12. Shop Kari and Bling -N- Fashion are full of cute, contemporary clothes. Clausen’s has very nice styles for men and women alike.

Fitness

Keeping our community healthy is important. We have an amazing locally owned yoga studio called Awaken Yoga. We also have many places to work out, including a new LeMars CROSSFIT gym , and LeMars Functional Fitness, and our newly remodeled YMCA.

Health

Our new Floyd Valley Hospital, with an assortment of doctors for every need, keeps our community healthy. LeMars Physical Therapy is know for their great service and knowhow. Ritz Chiropractic Care and Simonsen Chiropractic are great place to utilize if you need an adjustment.

Outside Recreation

Willow Creek Golf Course, is our 27 hole course that is perfect for a beginner or a seasoned golfer. Our 55 mile trail that goes between 2 counties and wraps around the north side of LeMars is great for biking, walking and running. We have many parks for children, including a new Skate park, and many parks with new playground equipment. Our large municipal park is newly redone, including camping areas and a public swimming/fishing lake. We have an amazing youth baseball complex and youth little league program, a newly remodeled YMCA, and a community Disc Golf Course.

Education

LeMars Community School District LCSD

Comprised of three elementary schools, one middle school and one high school; Le Mars Community Schools develop academic excellence. Each school plays an integral role in providing a comprehensive educational experience.

The schools believe in the importance of a well rounded education, offering many extra curricular activities to help students develop important skills outside of the classroom. At Le Mars Community Schools, students can express themselves through many music programs including choir, band and orchestra. At Le Mars Community Schools, students have the opportunity to develop athletically, while being a team member in a number of successful programs.

Gehlen Catholic Schools

Gehlen Catholic School strives to promote an openness to God, to provide a quality education, and to instill Catholic values in a caring, challenging, and prayerful environment. Gehlen offers a pre-K through 12 grade program. They also have sports, arts, and many other extra curricular activities for their students.

Arts

The LeMars Art Center: Gallery, Gift Shop and Studio. We have an amazing space for adults and kids to take classes from everything from making and painting pottery to painting watercolors, and exhibitions of traveling and local artists.

Our local community theater, “The Postal Playhouse,” typically runs four shows a year. Showcasing our local talent, these comedies, dramas or musicals are not to be missed!

Another interesting thing we have here in LeMars, is our Ally Art. Our whimsical and historical murals (all 50 of them) created by 115 midwest artists (including some locals) are so popular, that during Ice Cream Days we have many very popular walking tours of the art.

Browns Century Theater

The Brown Family Theater (yes they are locals!) Has wonderful shows all year long. They are a family of singers, and they also use instruments to accompany their seasonal and holiday entertainment. They often have visiting singers that share their gifts of entertainment from country to traditional Hymns. The Brown Theater gift shop is a cute place for gifts and homemade chocolates!

Faith and Worship

There are so many wonderful places of worship to grow in your spirituality and community. The Presbyterian United Church of Christ, Rejoice Church, The United Methodist Church of Le Mars, Grace Lutheran Church, The Bible Church and All Saints Catholic Church are just a few of your choices.

Beauty

We have many beauty salons to help you keep looking your best. Verve Salon, Sie Bella, Glow, and Head to Toe Salon are all great places to get your hair beautiful. Zenergy Skin and Soul Studio can assist you with any facials or skin pleasing treatments you need.
